WELKOM- Local authorities managed to track down a gang of four men, alleged to have a planned robberies syndicate in various townships within Lejweleputswa District Municipality.
In a released statement, Provincial police spokesperson, Thandi Mbambo, says the group was arrested near Hennenman on Monday 5 July, at midnight.
“Members of Welkom’s Tactical Response Team (TRT) received a tip-off on planned robberies. The suspects, who are between the ages of 27 and 34 years old, were on their way to Hennenman from Virginia in a Grey Hyundai Getz when they were stopped and searched by the police,” statement read.
Mbambo says authorities found two firearms with serial numbers removed as well as ammunition in the vehicle.
None of the accused could produce valid licences for the firearms and as such were arrested on scene.
Police confiscated the weapons and the vehicle for further investigation.
They are expected to appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court in connection with the unlicensed weapons. It is unknown if authorities have any tangible evidence to charge the accused for the planned robberies.
