Security guard shot in Welkom’s cash-in-transit heist, police activates 72-hour action plan

A 72-hour plan has been activated to hunt down the heavily armed gang who shot and wounded cash-in-transit security personnel who were collecting cash from Devland Cash & Carry wholesale in Welkom this morning.

Captain Stephen Thakeng, police spokesperson in the region of Lejweleputswa says security personnel were at the wholesale in Power road Welkom, when three unknown African men armed with handguns accosted them.

“One security officer was shot in his hip bone, his firearm was robbed and a customer was shot in his right knee,” Thakeng says.

It is further reported that, an undisclosed amount of cash was robbed and three armed robbers flee the scene in a getaway vehicle, a silver Mercedes Benz with registration number FTC 729 FS.

He said no one has been arrested yet for the robbery, and investigations are underway.

“Manhunt has been launched and the investigation will be taken over by the Hawks or DPCI,” details Singo.

“A 72-hour activation plan has also been implemented there [as well],” he added.
