More than 300 suspects were arrested during an extensive Easter holiday crime blitz across Lejweleputswa district, police said on Wednesday.
According to the district’s police spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng, the joint operation by the police nabbed hundreds for drugs, disobeying road rules, liquor related offences, illegal traders and weapons.
“From the 15 until the 18 April, at least 301 people were arrested for the following crimes; drug related crimes, driving under the influence of alcohol, dangerous weapons, possession of stolen properties, liquor related crimes, traffic related crimes,” said Thakeng.
Thakeng further noted that over 26 shebeens were closed by the police, for operating illegally, while others had no valid liquor licenses.
Roadblocks were held in the district’s five municipalities and searches were conducted on municipal roads, at boutiques and wholesalers.
Thakeng said the operation was conducted under the command of Lejweleputswa police commissioner general Lerato Molale.
“The District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa police, general Lerato Molale praised all SAPS members within for their dedication, commitment and patriotism to ensure that law abiding citizens are and feel safe,” said Thakeng.
“He further thanked residents for trusting the police with sensitive information which led to these arrests,” he explained further.
