Three men and a woman will today appear before the Welkom Magistrate Court for attempted business robbery.
Their alleged crime involved an attempt to rob a clothing store in Welkom.
Lejweleputswa police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, previously said the suspects were arrested after they have been been involved in a string of shoplifting activities at Pep Store.
According to Thakeng, the ordeal took place on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at about 5:30 pm.
“One of the suspects approached me with his shirt up, revealing a firearm in his pants and forcefully pushed me into the manager’s office. Fortunately, I managed to pull out my pepper spray and spray him in the face,” Thakeng says the the security officer told the police.
The suspect ran towards the door and the other three followed.
The suspect was chased by the security officers and arrested near Bellas Tarven. They brought him back to the clothing store, and found a firearm in his possession.
“The Welkom flying squad, responded quickly at the scene and arrested a 44-year-old man from Joubertina Klerksdorp and confiscated his replica firearm,” detailed Thakeng.
