Over this past week, members of the police were left in disarray following horrific scenes where alleged thugs manhandled police officers in separate occasions in Thabong and in Kutloanong.
In a first incident, members of Welkom Public Order Policing were off-duty when they responded to an incident where an off-duty police officer’s private vehicle was broken and valuable items stolen in Odendaalsrus.
It is reported that the suspect threatened the SAPS member with two knives and was overpowered and arrested.
In a separate incident in Thabong, two SAPS members were attending to a domestic violence case and were both assaulted. The suspect was overpowered and arrested.
Stephen Thakeng, police spokesperson in the vicinity of Lejweleputswa unpacked to Kasi Voice News that police officers came under sting attack this past week, where officers were held to ransom by senseless thugs, however, the police cracked in all suspects in the nick of time.
While people were embracing Valentines day, on February 14, at about 18:30 an off-duty a police sergeant from Wesselsbron was visiting his family in K9 Section in Kutloanong and parked his private vehicle outside, when he he heard the the glass been broken and his vehicle alarm went off.
“Then he quickly came out of the house and saw the suspect busy stealing his belongings through the driver’s window which was already broken,” says Thakeng.
“When the suspect realized he was seen, he then dropped items stolen on the ground and ran away from the scene. Residents and an off-duty SAPS member chased him until to his residence where he armed himself with two knives and shouted that nobody will enter in his yard.
“A back up of Welkom Public Order Policing who were also off – duty were summoned and responded instantly to the scene. They tactically entered the premises and found the suspect still armed with two knives, minimum force had to be used to disarm him and a 27-year-old man was arrested,” detailed Thakeng.
According to Thakeng, the suspect is facing two charges which entails of motor vehicle theft and being in possession of dangerous weapons.
In Thabong, the following day, at about 15:32 two police officers attended to a complaint of a woman who was physically abused by her ex-boyfriend and also her cellphone was forcefully taken.
“On arrival of the members the suspect was violent and assaulted the two Police officers with fists and open hands,” Thakeng says.
“The two SAPS members managed to overpower him and a 29-year-old suspect was arrested and is facing common assault (Attack on two Police Officers),” revealed Thakeng.
The two suspects will appear soon in Odendaalsrus and Welkom Magistrate Courts respectively.
The acting district commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Brigadier Envor Solomon applauded the SAPS members of Thabong and Welkom Public Order Policing for their commitment and dedication to ensure that when they are attacked, they manage to use minimum force to overpower those trying to undermine the authority of the state.
