Seven armed men attempt to rob the smelt house in Virginia on Saturday, 07 August 2021.
At around 00:05, armed robbers, cut the fence and climbed over the wall using a ladder. The seven men had two automatic rifles and handguns. They tied the supervisor of the smelt house with cable ties. One guard, Mr Riaan Potter (36), tried to defend the territory but was fatally shot. Another 34-year-old security officer was shot below his stomach and was admitted at one of the hospitals in Matjhabeng.
The robbers managed to steal two hand radios and two firearms. One short gun (Number AM 34523) with eight rounds and a 9mm CZ Pistol (Number 0246M) with 15 live rounds. They however, could not gain access to the smelt house where good is being processed.
At the scene of crime, cartridges of 9mm and those of AK 47 rifles were found and seized.
Cases of murder, attempted murder and business robbery have been registered for further investigation.
