The South African Medical Association (SAMA) has expressed with consternation after Welkom’s renowned Dr Simon Ngcobo was shot dead last night.
A murdered doctor was attacked in his home by armed suspects who held victims hostage and robbed off their cellphones and cash at gun point.
According to police spokesperson in Lejweleputswa district, captain Stephen Thakeng, the deceased was also kidnapped with his vehicle and found fatally wounded execution style in Riebeeckstad.
“At about 19:30, his wife drove for shopping with her two daughters aged two and five-years-old since it was load shedding and on arrival at their home in Doorn, Welkom, she was busy parking the vehicle inside the garage.
“The wife apparently heard a five-year-old daughter screaming for help and the wife saw an unknown African male pointing a firearm on a five-year-old child.
“The second African male was also seen armed with a handgun. They were forced to the house and the husband Doctor opened the door that was when the two suspects forced themselves inside the house,” detailed Thakeng.
“The doctor tried to fight back but he was overpowered and they demanded cash. An undisclosed amount of cash was robbed from the safe and cellphones.
“He was forced from his home, suspects driving his white Renault Duster sedan with Free State registration numbers.”
Thakeng says the search was initiated and with the help of the Tracker, the vehicle was found abandoned at the corner of Craib and Blenheim streets in Riebeeckstad.
“Six metres from the vehicle, the body of the doctor was found with shot wounds in his head and chest. He was certified dead with his hands tied up from his back,” said Thakeng.
“Should anyone have information leading to the arrests of these two murderers, detective sergeant Andrew Lechesa can be contacted at cellphone number 060 985 9330,” Thakeng said.
The police have since activated a 72-hour action plan to hunt the culprits of this brutal act.
A case of murder and house robbery has been opened.
A 64-year-old doctor has been described as a respected and loved physician in the community of Thabong, where he served his patients with outmost distinction.
SAMA has expressed with shock and anger following the physician’s passing.
“The SAMA Board and SAMA members are deeply saddened by this shocking news. SAMA sends condolences to the bereaved family of Dr Ngcobo on the passing of their loved one. May they be comforted by the memories of the great and upstanding member of society that Dr Ngcobo was. May his soul rest in peace,” said the association.
The association furthermore revealed that it is deeply concerned over the safety of medical professions, and believes that there are provisions that needs to be made to ensure safety of medical professionals.
“We are deeply concerned and very anxious over the safety of medical professionals in our country, because they [medical doctors] commits their selflessness in ensuring that their patients get proper medical services,” expressed the association.
