Police arrest female cop, man’s girlfriend for extortion

A Meloding woman accused a man of rape. She also allegedly worked with a female police officer to extort the man of R15 000 to drop the case.

On Sunday, 13 March, the 29-year-old woman went to her boyfriend’s residence, and asked him for R4 000. The man then told her that he spent the money on his spouse in Mozambique. As a result, the woman wanted to end the relationship.

Lejweleputswa police spokesperson, Captain Stephen Thakeng, says that the woman then left to an unknown destination.

After she left, the boyfriend received a call from Meloding Police Station notifying him that his girlfriend was registering a rape case.

“Furthermore, the girlfriend called the boyfriend demanding R15 000 to drop the case,” added Thakeng.

The Anti-Corruption Unit was notified about the incident and they set a trap for the suspects.

They managed to arrest two women – the girlfriend and a 41-year-old police constable from Meloding Police Station.

The team also found R5 000 cash in the suspects’ possession and arrested them for extortion.

Both suspects will soon appear before Virginia Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 22 March.
