Police arrested a suspect (27) with illegal mining gold dust on Tuesday, 11 November 2021, Mahala Park Meloding, Virginia.
Welkom Public Order Policing Task Team, under the leadership of Warrant Officer Thabo Booy, received a tip-off from Meloding residents about a person in possession of bags of gold dust.
Members swiftly responded to the information and visited a house in Mahala Park Meloding.
They caught the suspect red handed processing the gold dust.
They arrested the 27-year-old man on the spot with three plastic bags of gold dust. The bags weighed 9,658 kg and had estimated street value of R15 000. Police also confiscated another bag of Borax.
The suspect, Thabang Chale, appeared before Virginia Magistrate Court on the Thursday, 11 November 2021.
The suspect received an unknown bail amount and the case will continue on Tuesday, 23 November 2021.
