Odendaalsrus cops on hunt for bogus ‘prophets’ after student robbed cellphones worth R21k

The Odendaalsrus police are still hunting for two armed suspects who posed themselves as prophets, when they robbed off a 24-year-old female student at gunpoint.

District regional police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng, unearthed that the incident happen last two months ago in August 19, and the police have not made any arrests thus far.

Thakeng says the victim [student], was approached by two unknown men pretending to be seemingly lost and asking for directions.

“The victim was asked about a direction to Lethabo Pre-School, and after she responded that she has no idea of the place, one of the suspect prophesied her and she was robbed six cellphones,” says Thakeng.

“The first male person told the female student that he is a prophet and that he knows who killed her mother.

“He continued to prophecy the driver who was close to them. But the person who claimed to be a prophet told her that they must go to a quite place so that he can show her people who killed her mother on his mirror,” says Thakeng.

“The female student responded that it’s good that they must go together to her family so that they can hear this news,” Thakeng added.

It is alleged that the victim then agreed and stepped into the car, and was given a drink.

After the victim drank an offered drink, the suspect demanded the cellphone of the student and ordered her to go to four of her friends and pretend to be borrowing their cellphones that amounts to R21 000.

“She was dropped close to her home and ordered not to look back as she was given a stone, the victim took all cellphones from her friends and gave them to the suspects,” elaborates Thakeng.

The suspects allegedly fled the scene, and a case of armed robbery was opened, while an Identikit was compiled.

Description of the suspects are:

The first suspect is dark in complexion, overweight, could be 1,7 metres in height. He was wearing a black shirt, dark blue denim and grey sneakers and could be 50 to 55-years-old.

The second suspect was light in complexion, 1,7 metres in height, slender, he was wearing a white cap, red jacket and black tracksuits pants and could be between 30 to 35-years-old. Both speak Pedi language.

Thakeng says the alleged victims were driving a white sedan vehicle with KwaZulu-Natal registration number.

Residents are sternly warned to be aware of these criminals posing as prophets.
