The police in Meloding have made an arrest of three suspects alleged to have conspired in the brutal murder of a former ward councillor.
The ward councillor, Piet Moletsane, was shot and killed while leaving the tavern he was working at in September 2021.
The police’s provincial organised crime unit was tasked to investigate the murder and on the same month.
“The unit successfully traced and arrested two suspects aged 31 and 34 for the murder of the deceased,” said Free State police spokesperson Motansi Makhele.
Makhele further revealed that as per the investigation conducted by the police, the two accused were allegedly hired as hitmen.
“After an intensive investigation, the 44-year-old former ward councillor at the time of this murder, was also traced and arrested for the murder,” Makhele said.
“He is allegedly linked as the mastermind in the murder that happened back in 2021,” he added.
The suspect will appear in the Virginia Magistrate court tomorrw, Wednesday.
The other two accused are still in custody.
