Making Strides: How a youngster cracked into an egg producing business

Thembinkosi Mkhwanazi, a 24-year-old entrepreneur, is the proud owner of ‘The Egg Palace’, a business specializing in poultry and egg production in Qwaqwa. His journey began in Bloemfontein, where his passion for sales emerged while selling sweets and snacks at school.

Moving to QwaQwa for his studies at the University of Free State (UFS), Mkhwanazi ventured into business during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 after parting ways with his friend.

Encouraged by the demand for his eggs, he resumed selling on the streets, leading to remarkable growth within the Bluegumbosch community.

What sets his business apart is not only selling eggs but also delivering them to customers’ doorsteps, covering areas such as Clubview, UFS Qwaqwa campus, and Phuthaditjhaba.

With aspirations of expanding ‘The Egg Palace‘ to become a leading egg and poultry supplier in Qwaqwa and the entire Free State, Mkhwanazi envisions reaching every corner of the region.

I“I want to be able to sell and deliver eggs and chickens in all part of Qwaqwa and Free State. I also want to venture into piggery and ploughing,” says Mkhwanazi.

Inspired by his mentors Mpho and Thabiso, he sees vast opportunities for youth in agriculture, emphasizing the importance of passion and care in rearing chickens.

“You have to love what you do, since Chickens are like children you have to take care of them properly so that you can also get positive results. For instance, I buy food for my chickens and treat them well in return the give me
eggs,” says Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi’s commitment to sustainability is evident in his practice of using chicken waste as garden fertilizer, which he generously shares with the community for free as a gesture of gratitude.

“I have met lot of inspiring people and I have learned a lot from that experience. I am grateful that I got a huge opportunity as such and winning was just a bonus for me”, concluded Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi can be reached through various social platforms under the name ‘The egg palace‘, or alternatively, via WhatsApp at the number 071 955 0085.
