Handcuffed fugitive dies in hospital after fleeing from police van

A man has died after he attempted to flee from the police van following his incarceration on Sunday, March 17.

According to insiders, the man managed to open the “chess” door of the police car and escaped.

He crouched in the middle of the street after jumping out of the car as he was attempting to run for his life. 

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has initiated an investigation to probe the circumstances surrounding the prisoner’s escape from the vehicle.

IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping said that the incident took place in Nyakallong, Allanridge and the fugitive was in the back of a moving police van when he rolled out trying to escape and passed away on his arrival in hospital, as the deceased sustained serious injuries.

 “The deceased died in hospital and the incident was reported to IPID, the investigation has started,” Shuping said.

Circumstances surrounding the motive behind the arrest of the deceased remain unknown, and the South African Police Service (SAPS) are yet to respond.
