A head-on-collision between a truck and a minibus Quantum taxi has claimed 13 lives this morning on the N1 highway in the Free State.
According to the police on scene, the truck driver was travelling from Postmasburg Durban while the minibus Quantum was travelling from Johannesburg to Sterkspruit, when the truck lost control and collided with a taxi carrying passengers.
“Apparently the truck driver lost control and landed in front of the oncoming minibus in the N1 road next to Candy farm, 22 km from Verkeerdevlei towards Winburg,” says the police.
A head-on collision ensued which led to seven male persons, one baby boy, three girls were certified dead, while one boy and two girls aged between 10-12 were admitted in Pelonomi Hospital with serious injuries.
The police confirmed that a 47-year-old truck driver was arrested for culpable homicide, and investigations are ongoing.
Free State traffic department officials and the Verkeerdevlei police are on the scene to control the traffic while experts are busy with the crime scene.
Motorists are advised to drive slowly as they approach the accident scene in the N1 road.
