Horrific head-on-collision in Theunissen claim lives of mine workers

Three mine workers lost their lives when their light motor vehicle collided with a truck on the R730 road, as they were travelling from Theunissen towards Welkom direction on Wednesday morning.

According to police spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng, Theunissen police have opened a case of culpable homicide.

Unpacking the cause of the accident, Thakeng said a preliminary investigation at the scene indicated that vehicles were travelling in opposite directions.

“A truck and a white Toyota Corolla were traveling in the opposite direction, and the driver of Toyota Corolla lost control and landed in front of the in-coming truck, which led to head-on collision,” elaborates Thakeng.

“There were three occupants inside the sedan and were certified dead at the accident scene and the truck driver was treated for shock but with no injuries.

“Jaws of life had to be used to retrieve the driver of the sedan vehicle, ” says Thakeng.

The police found that, the three deceased were mine workers from Beatrix Mine.

A stop-and-go system was put in place on the road, and the scene had since been cleared.
