After full 26-hours of intense search for the 65-year-old woman who fell into an open manhole in Thabong on Monday, August 15, her lifeless body was found on Tuesday afternoon.
After an emotionally challenging search that lasted for at least two days, the family’s plight and uncertainty has finally been put to bed.
The elderly woman identified as Dineo Mayisela, was found by the police’s diving unit and Matjhabeng municipality’s fire brigade team at the Thabong’s main sewerage main pipeline hole.
Mayisela family was called to the scene where they positively identified her lifeless body.
Confirming the recovery of the body is Lejweleputswa district police spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng who said the body was recovered at the main hole station at around 15:00.
“The body was retrieved from main sewerage manhole at a residential area in Thabong, she was certified dead by the Emergency Medical Services personnel,” Thakeng told Kasi Voice News.
On Monday, Kasi Voice News informed that the late Mayisela, was seen by witnesses when she vanished into an open sewer manhole.
Her younger sister, confirmed that Mayisela left their home as she alleged that she was going to visit one of the church members, however, with a concern that Mayisela was gone for long, her sister then tempted to make a call which was then answered by the police who informed that an older woman suspected to be [Dineo] Mayisela fell into a manhole.
The rising cases of infrastructure theft in Matjhabeng are at the centre of a grave concern.
The people’s Ultimate voice of community reached out to Matjhabeng municipality spokesperson Kgojane Matutle who stressed that uncovered manholes are a bedrock issue for the municipality, and the municipality has a limited capacity to prevent this issues from persisting any further.
“We’ve been fighting a losing battle against vandalism and municipal infrastructure theft,” said Matutle.
“We have pleaded with communities to liaise with us by reporting these instances of illegal activities,” he said.
