Young people brave cold front to celebrate Youth Day in various sport activities

At the Youth Day commemoration for the historical June 16, young people across Lejweleputswa district braved the cold front, with the day dawned with clear skies and icy temperatures as they gathered in Unitas Secondary School’s sports field for various mural activities coordinated by the Lejwe Health and Fitness.

Despite the early morning chill, a crowd of young people – ranging from school-age learners began arriving at the sports venues from 7am on Thursday.

A dedicated youth celebration event was made possible by Lejwe Health and Fitness, provincial government departments, Health and Sports & Culture, SA Police Service, Child Life and Love Life.

These were main and sub-sponsors for the initial event, with community members and the ANC Youth League in the district donating refreshments and sports materials.

The sports activities that took charge on the day, includes of aerobics, rugby, soccer and netball.

The young resilient and event coordinator for the well-celebrated event Keikantseng Moahloli said, winners of the day were graced with trophies and gold medals, while second runners were honoured with silver medals.

Moahloli on behalf of Lejwe Health & Fitness said, the impediment in the community of the district are mostly affected by gangsterism, teenage pregnancy and school dropouts.

“Boys in our community with no ideal goals and direction often results involved in gangsterism and selling drugs.

“Girls in our community often sleep around with different men, and some includes gang leaders who put their lives in danger,” Moahloli said.

In brief, Lejwe Health, said the key role to facilitate this event was highly empowered to make young lads and lasses to realise their worth and to change their social behaviours.

“This will lead them in a very good direction towards changing their behaviours as a whole,” she added.
