In a case that has captured the attention of the community and highlights the troubling issue of gender-based violence in South Africa, a 36-year-old woman is set to appear in Fauresmith Magistrate Court today. The accused faces a charge of murder following a tragic incident in which she allegedly stabbed her live-in boyfriend to death.

The fatal confrontation occurred in the early hours of 07 September in Relebohile Extension 2, Luckhoff, a town in the Free State Province. According to police spokesperson in the region, sergeant Sinah Mpakane, the disturbing events unfolded when a neighbor, who is also a community member, called for an ambulance from the police station.

Mpakane confirmed the grim scene: “An adult male had been stabbed by his partner at his house.” Upon arrival, police discovered the man with a severe chest wound in his living room. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Details of the incident reveal a tense and tragic interaction between the couple.

The neighbor reported that the suspect claimed her partner had threatened her when she arrived at his home. The victim had also arrived at the scene but reportedly did not communicate with anyone before the stabbing occurred. “The suspect said her partner wanted to kill her, and in the course of the incident, she stabbed him with the knife she had brought with her,” the neighbor recounted.

The knife used in the attack has been seized as evidence and will be pivotal in the upcoming trial. The suspect, who was arrested on the scene, faces a charge of murder.
