Suspect arrested with hand-grenade at Braam Fischer Airport

The Braam Fischer Airport police arrested a 28-year-old white male for being in possession of hand-grenade and drill on Monday, 03 January 2021.

The alleged suspect arrived at the airport and reported at the ‘check-in-counter’, where he handed his luggage over to be searched.

When the G4S officer placed the passenger’s bag inside the X-ray scanner, the scanner detected a round metal object inside the bag.

This led to the security officer physically searching the bag. Upon searching, the officer found a drill and a hand-grenade.

The airport counter had clear pictures with messages of prohibited items within the premises.

The airport police received a tip to the counter, and instantly decided to activate the evacuation alarm, looking at the possibility of a threat in the terminal building.

Bomb Disposal Unit also attended the scene to handle the evidence and to sweep the building.

The team later declared the building safe and operations continued as normal.

Members opened a case of possession of hand-grenade shell and interference with Airport operations (Aviation Act 13/ 2000 Section 134).

The suspect was detained and he will face charges of being possession of illegal items.
