Police officer in critical condition after being stabbed, suspect shot dead

A Viljoenskroon police official sustains severe injuries while attending to a domestic violence complaint and the suspect looses his life on Wednesday, 02 March in Viljoenskroon.

On Wednesday morning, two police officers, sergeant Frans Pieterse and constable Paseka Maseko, attended to a domestic violence complaint at Evans Park, Viljoenskroon. Upon arrival, the officers approached a male suspect and he allegedly attacked them with a knife.

According to Fezile Dabi police spokesperson, Captain Malebo Khosana, the suspect stabbed sergeant Pieterse on the neck and on the shoulder blade.

Crime Prevention members were called to the scene and found the suspect still battling with the officer.

The suspect continued to stab officer Pieterse on the lower abdomen and started attacking everyone around him.

Authorities opened fire at the suspect after showing no intention of stopping even after various means to try to stop him.

The police shot him on the right arm and lower abdomen.

Emergency personnel services certified the suspect dead on the scene. They also transferred sergeant Pieterse to a medical facility in Kroonstad for further medical attention.

The deceased, Thapelo Aaron Ntjato (21), is the son of the man who complained at the police station in the morning. The father complained about his son’s violent behaviour that they endured throughout the night. According to the police report, the father also complained that his son used a knife to threaten them.

The police registered dockets of attempted murder and murder for further investigation with IPID taking the murder docket.

The Fezile Dabi District acting district commissioner, Brigadier Mapulane Mbeloane called onto community members to refrain from attacking police officials.
