Damaged infrastructure reported by the mine security in Welkom on Friday, 24 December 2021, left Bronville township without electricity for days.
On the night of the alleged occurrence, the mine security reported a damage of the infrastructure belonging to Matjhabeng Municipality, where electrical poles and wires had been brought to the ground.
Security personnel reported that a white BMW sped off from the scene following the thuggery.
According to Welkom police spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng, perpetrators damaged anchors of the 132KV electrical wires set up that supply the entire Welkom.
This economic sabotage was committed in President Steyn Mine vicinity, Shaft 1, next to Intermine offices.
The police registered a case if malicious damage to property, and launched manhunt to find perpetrators.
Matjhabeng Mayor, Councillor Thanduxolo Khalipha, Community Services and Public Safety MMC, Councillor Rubben Tlake, Bronville Ward Councillor, Sipho Tsunke, Lejweleputswa District Commissioner, Major General Lerato Molale and Brigadier Mzondi Mojafi attended the crime scene to inspect the damage.
