Illegal immigrant arrested for stealing Telkom copper cable in Welkom

Welkom Crime Prevention and Reaction Team of Illicit Copper Cable members arrested copper cable thief on Wednesday, 27 October 2021, at Macbeth Street in St Helena.

Members responded to a complaint about suspects in blue overalls stealing copper cable in St Helena.

The team immediately went to the scene and found a 21-year-old Zimbabwean national with 10 metres of copper cable.

Suspect tried to run, but police apprehended him.

The copper cable belongs to Telkom and estimated to be worth R13 000.

In a separate incident, Reaction Team to Combat Illicit Copper Cable members followed information about business burglary at Theronia Waste Water Treatment plant on R30 road.

Upon arrival, they found copper cable drum worth R100 000 abandoned and confiscated it.

Abandoned copper cables by thieves when they saw Police officers.

Major General Lerato Molale warned copper-cable thieves that they had numbered days and police would continue to hit hard on them.

District Commissioner said, “The Police will leave no stone unturned until they apprehend all copper cable thieves within Lejweleputswa District.”
