Zamdela SAPS members arrested ten suspects for copper cable valued at thousands of rands on Thursday, 11 November 2021.
A member on duty, Sergeant Jonas Moeng, followed up information about vehicles transporting copper cable.
Upon driving on R82 near Kragbon, he noticed two vehicles, a Hyundai H100 truck with GP registration number followed by an Isuzu bakkie belonging to a Transnet security guard.
The member requested assistance and Zamdela DOCC and K9 joined him.
When the Hyundai truck stopped, three males alighted from it, ran away into the bushes.
Upon searching the truck, police found ten other males at the back sitting on copper cables.
They did not reply when asked how they ended up in possession of the copper cable.
Police arrested the suspects and confiscated copper cable and the truck.
Copper cable weighed 311 kg and had an estimated street value of R167 800.
According to a security guard on the scene, the cables belong to Transnet and are suspected to be stolen in Koppies.
Suspects aged between 22-39 years will be charged for possession of suspected stolen copper. They will appear before Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
Fezile Dabi Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Mapulane Mbeloane, commended the community for providing information about these criminals.
“Copper cable is an essential infrastructure that affects our daily lives immensely. As a results these hoodlums should not be allowed to destroy this infrastructure but be brought to book,” concluded Brigadier Mbeloane.
