Virginia residents in the Merrispruit and Kitty neighbourhoods were woken by gunfire and explosives sounds as a security company vehicle was being attacked on the R30 road, near the Virginia correctional services today.
According to the Lejweleputswa police spokesperson, captain Stephen Thakeng, the vehicle was travelling from Beatrix mine when it was attacked.
“A white Toyota Camry hit the security vehicle and thereafter occupants of a silver-grey Mercedez Benz fired shots at the security vehicle,” said Thakeng.
Thakeng said armed suspects used commercial explosives to blast the vehicle.
Furthermore, they robbed a gold ore, an R5 rifle and a 9mm pistol belonging to the driver and his crew during this incident.
These suspects then used a grey BMW with unknown registration numbers as a getaway car and abandoned the white Toyota Camry at the scene.
It has been reported that another BMW was spotted driving at a high speed in the same direction taken by the first BMW.
“Anyone with information regarding the incident may contact the nearest police station on their emergency number, 0860010111. Alternatively they may use the MySAPS App,” said Thakeng.
