On Thursday, 16 September 2021, the accused, Mayisewa Alpheous Makhubo (38), and his close corporation, Thembiselwa Trading CC, appeared before the Frankfort Regional Court facing charges of contravening the Tax Administration Act.
A preliminary probe by the South African Revenue Services (SARS) uncovered Makhubo’s fraudulent activities that cost the receiver of revenue (SARS) in access of more than R1 million. The incident took place between 2016 and 2019.
The matter was then reported to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation in Bloemfontein for further investigation. Makhubo was served court summons on 18 October 2019. He appeared in court on several occasions, culminating in his recent conviction.
The court sentenced Makhubo to four (4) years direct imprisonment.
