On Thursday, 16 September 2021, a man hiking on the N1 road near Makeleketla township was robbed at gunpoint by two men in a car.
46-year-old Lehlohonolo Sewer, residing in Winburg was at a hiking spot on the N1 road behind Makeleketla township when a vehicle stopped next to him. Apparently the driver instructed him to enter the vehicle at gun point, but Sewer refused. He was then assaulted with this gun and sustained head injuries. The second suspect then grabbed and forced the victim inside the car. The second suspect also robbed Sewer of R40 cash.
They drove with him in the direction of Ventersburg. After traveling for a while, the vehicle stopped due to lack of fuel and had to park beside the road.
The victim managed to escape and saw a passing Police vehicle and reported the incident.
Upon arrival of Winburg SAPS, the passenger suspect was found sleeping inside the vehicle. Apparently the driver hiked to Ventersburg to buy petrol. SAPS members conducted a way-lay for the driver to come back. When he arrived, he was arrested as well.
The vehicle was also seized and during the search, a toy gun was found inside the vehicle.
The suspects aged 24 and 42, from Bronville were arrested for Armed Robbery. Members who effected the arrests were Captain Nineve Landman, Station Commander, Warrant Officer Frans Mofokeng, Constables Sello Moleleki and Molefi Molikoe of Winburg Police Station.
