The Welkom K9 Unit arrested a foreign national following a hijacking in Riebeeckstad yesterday morning.
According to the Lejweleputswa police spokesperson, captain Stephen Thakeng, the K9 Unit acted constructively after receiving information about a hijacking that took place in Jasons street, Riebeeckstad, Welkom.
“The police, along with private security initiated a manhunt,” added Thakeng.
During the search, the police found the hijacked vehicle in Thubelitsha Section, Thabong. To their surprise, the stock that was initially in the vehicle was not there.
As a result, the search continued and the police were led to Mashele street in Oppenheimer Park, Thabong. They found a second vehicle with the stock looted from the hijacked vehicle. The stock included large quantities of cigarettes, other tobacco products, sweets, and other items. These items are hace a value of R130 000.
Following these findings, the police arrested the 43-year-old foreign national for hijacking and possession of suspected stolen items. Thakeng says more arrests are imminent.
“Apparently, perpetrators hijacked the delivery man with firearms,” informed Thakeng.
The arrested suspect will soon appear before the Welkom Magistrate Court.
The K9 Unit officers that effected the arrest were warrant officers David Scott and Frikkie Mbombo, sergeant Gert Makoata as well as constable Gordan Kamfer.
