Stock theft: Foreign national busted for 35 stolen cattle in Odendaalsrus

A foreign national has been arrested in Odendaalsrus in connection with theft of 35 Bonsmara cattle, a high-quality SA beef breed.

Police spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng said the cattle were stolen from a farm in the district of Odendaalsrus, and the police seized 19 cattle after tracks were followed.

“The case was assigned to the following members Lejweleputswa District Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit, Constable Galeboe, Sergeant Ramatsa and Warrant Officer Coen de Beer whereby tracks were followed up for several km which ended at a maize field, 10 cattle were found abandoned,” said Thakeng.

“Additional 19 cattle were found 7 km from the farm where live stock were stolen,” explained Thakeng.

Thakeng further said, six cattle are still missing, while the 29 cattle were handed back to the owner.

“Two foreigners were found with the cattle but a 37-years-old African man was arrested and the second suspect managed to flee,” he said.

The suspect is due to appear before the Odendaalsrus Magistrate Court on Monday, 9 May, where he will face charges of being in possession of suspected stolen live stock and illegal immigration.
