Bogus municipality workers took off with valuable items from a house robbery on Wednesday, 21 December, in Naudeville, Welkom.
According to the Lejweleputswa police spokesperson, captain Stephen Thakeng, on the morning of the robbery, a 51-year-old female domestic worker was removing laundry from the washing line in the backyard when she heard a call at the gate.
“When she went to check, three African males claiming to be from Matjhabeng Municipality, confronted the woman” added Thakeng.
The men allegedly stated their visit was to check the water meter reading as requested by the 51-year-old’s employer. Furthermore, the woman refused to allow them inside, but they insisted until she opened the gate for them.
“The men then overpowered and forced her inside the house,” Thakeng informed.
Upon arrival into the house, the bogus municipal workers asked the woman where the master bedroom was and headed that way.
The 51-year-old alleged she was tied up, lying on the floor and her head covered with a blanket. She further stated that although her head was covered, she could hear the men ransacking the bedroom.
After it had been quiet for a while, the woman said she managed to untie herself.
“The employer was informed of the incident and a thorough inspection of the house was conducted. It revealed the following to be robbed: two wrist watches, Gucci perfume, Versace perfume, Gucci ladies perfume and a remote control,” Thakeng reported.
Trio suspects were wearing blue jeans with blue overall tops and green reflector jackets. Their faced were covered with face masks.
A house robbery case was registered for further investigation.
“Anyone with information regarding these suspects should contact captain Yolanda Hulme of Welkom Serious and Violent Crimes on 0824931204. Alternatively, they may use the Crime Stop number, 0860010111,” concluded Thakeng.
