Free State Hawks have arrested former Human Resource Officer at Fezile Dabi District Education for allegedly creating ghost educators and defrauding the Department of Education over R1 million.
“A 57-year-old suspect was arrested in Vereeniging yesterday, 26 May, by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team based in Welkom,” spokesperson captain Christopher Singo said.
The alleged suspect, created ghost employees and fabricated salary advices in the names of her family members.
It is alleged that she then used her personal banking details, as if they belonged to the ghost employees.
“The accused made salary payments to different bank accounts that belonged to her. The incident took place between the period of 2006 until 2018,” said Singo.
As a result of the fraudulent activities, the department was prejudiced and suffered a total loss of over R1 million.
Singi said, the Welkom police filed a case docket and handed it over to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team based in Welkom for further investigation.
This culminated in the arrest of the suspect yesterday.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Sasolburg Magistrates’ Court this morning, where she will face charges of fraud, forgery, uttering and money laundering.
