Five suspects arrested on Thursday, 30 September 2021, in Rustenburg in connection with sales of illegal pre-paid electricity.
The suspects, aged 36-47 were arrested in the early hours of the day by Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team based in Bethlehem.
Their arrests occurred during phase three of project-driven investigation by the Hawks in Free State with Eskom Investigators.
This project-driven investigation began in May 2020 in Bloemfontein. It targeted the illicit sale of electricity, facilitated by illegal vendors who have illegal electricity vending machines. This illegal selling and purchasing of electricity is called ‘Ghost vending’.
Suspects will appear before the Fochville Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 01 October 2021.
