The Hawks have arrested a municipal official from Mafube Local Municipality in Frankfort, Free State in connection with a funeral cover policy fraudulent activity that resulted in the municipality losing over R8 000.
Nthabiseng Dlomo is facing charges of fraud, theft and alleged contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act.
The 38-year-old employee appeared before the Frankfort Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 03 May.
It is alleged that in 2018, Dlomo took a funeral cover policy with Old Mutual and provided the banking details of Mafube Municipality for monthly premiums.
This took place for a period of two years from 2018 until 2020. As a result of the fraudulent activities the municipality suffered a total loss of more than R8000.
Hawks Free State spokesperson Christopher Singo said the matter was then reported to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Team based in Bethlehem for further investigation which culminated in the arrest of Dlomo on yesterday.
“The case against Dlomo has been postponed to Monday, 23 May for transfer to Regional Court Bethlehem,” Singo said.
Dlomo was released on a R2 000 bail.
