In celebration of the women’s months, the Welkom policewomen conducted a series of activities throughout the week which yelded positive results and melted hearts.
According to the Lejweleputswa police spokesperson, captain Stephen Thakeng, the Welkom policewomen partnered up with various stakeholders to ensure an effective roadblock conducted on R730 road on Thursday morning, August 9th.
“Stakeholders included the Traffic Department, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Home Affairs, Immigration Officers and Fire Fighters,” added Thakeng.
Indeed, the roadblock became fruitful as an illegal immigrant found himself in handcuffs. The police searched 114 vehicles and 119 persons, leading to the issuing of 19 traffic fines amounting to R5 900.
The police’s women’s network distributed 400 GBV, femicide and domestic violence pamphlets. Their main message encouraged women to stand and support each other.

Furthermore, on Friday, August 11th, Welkom policewomen and the Women’s Network, showed love to the Riebeeckstad Orphanage Centre. Out of their own pockets, these women bought groceries, matrasses and clothes, then donated them to the orphanage.
Colonel Beulah Siyaya of Welkom Visible Policing led these events.
The policewomen also conducted a multi-dimensional campaign in Bok street, in the Welkom CBD. The campaign was aimed at raising awareness on drugs, GBV and domestic violence and alleviate crime against women and children.
“These are part of the initiatives of women in blue and other stakeholders to be part of Operation Basadi to stamp the authority of the State,” concluded Thakeng.
