As the country continues to celebrate heroines, the nation recognise women for their stellar sacrifice in the struggle where this month is observed as “Mosadi o tshwara thipa ka bohaleng” – a Sesotho idiom roughly translated as “A woman holds the knife on the sharp side of the blade.”
While commemorating this prestigious month, women in blue [police officers] together with the women in the traffic department, electoral commission and department of health officials conducted a joint operation in Welkom to project visible policing and ensure that law abiding citizens are compliant and feel safe.
The focus of this joint venture with other stakeholders comprising women, was compliance inspection at second hand dealers, selling of expired goods, road traffic regulations enforced in a road block.
During this sting operation, pamphlets were also issued to empower motorists with crime hints on gender based violence and femicide.
Welkom SAPS describes its station as “victim-friendly” and encourages all members of the public to not feel ashamed and report any incidents of domestic conflict to staff on hand to assist them.
