Welkom cops launch manhunt after shooting ensued between armed robbers and SAPS

Yesterday, 10 May at about 16:00 a gun fire scene took charge between armed robbers and the police at Quick Fit in Welkom.

It is alleged that four suspects were armed with automatic rifles and handguns when they attempted to rob a store.

Lejweleputswa district police spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng said these suspects were in a white Mercedes Benz with GP number plates.

“The scene. the same white Mercedes Benz and now with FS number plates was seen at Odendaalsrus on Tuesday, 11 May,” Thakeng said.

“Then the occupants realised that they were being monitored and sped off in the direction of Welkom. The vehicle was spotted in the Stateway in the industrial site of Welkom.

“Members of Welkom K9 Unit gave chase and suspects shot at police with automatic rifles and 9mm handguns while they were been followed in a high speed,” he said further.

“The driver of the Mercedes Benz lost control and stucked in the ditch at the entrance of Bronville.

“The suspects then hijacked a couple in a BMW and sped off to Masimong mine, where the vehicle was found abandoned,” Thakeng elaborated.

“The vehicle of Welkom K9 Unit is riddled with bullets and no member sustained any injuries.

The police said the suspects are on the run and they are armed and dangerous.

A case of attempted murder and business robbery in Welkom has been registered for further investigation.
