Cops launch hunt after copper thieves run-off with R1.5m copper cable

Police are on the hunt for 12 suspects involved in an armed robbery at the Theunissen water works pump station, after a copper cable worth R 1.5 million was stolen on Friday, 1 April.

According to Lejweleputswa’s police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng, it is alleged that the process controller and the security officer were overpowered by armed men, with handguns and knives and ran-off with the cable in Theunissen, Masilonyana.

“They were allegedly tied up, and then the suspects started to strip the cable from the pump station that supply Masilonyana township with water which lasted until 05:00 the next day,” he said.

The police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects who are allegedly believed to be Lesotho foreign nationals.

“One of them managed to untie himself and sought help in the neighboring farmer and the Theunissen SAPS were informed about the incident,” he added.

Thakeng said the business robbery case was registered for further investigation.
