Thabong man, 36, sentenced to 22 years in jail for rape

A 36-year-old man, who forcefully tortured and raped a 31-year-old woman for countless times in Thabong, has been sentenced to 22 years behind bars.

The Welkom Regional Court convicted and sentenced the perpetrator to prison for rape, sexual assault and kidnapping the victim after the court heard the ordeal that 31-year-old woman was raped in a car of accused last two years ago in December 2020.

The accused Isaac Sediane, was arrested by the police after he laid his hands to the victim after they were travelling together from a local tavern at that time of the incident.

Police spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng said, it was around 2:13 am, when a 31-year-old woman was called by the accused, who asked to accompany her to a tavern for a night out.

“The victim had just arrived home when she received a telephone call from a male person she knows, asking her whereabouts and requested her to come to a tavern in the vicinity of her home.

“She walked on foot and when they both arrived, they realized that the tavern had already been closed.

“She got inside the car of the accused and both drove to another tavern in Thabong, to drink beer for almost two hours.

“They later left and drove to the victim’s home and the vehicle parked close to the yard. The male person asked for a kiss and the victim refused. She was insulted and instructed her that she cannot sleep around with other men and not sleeping with him,” said Thakeng.

Thakeng further added that the victim attempted to step out of the car, but the accused prevented, her and he drove off a car to a secluded area, a dark place behind Thabong Clinic.

“The accused forcefully undressed her and raped her twice while inside the car. After the rape ordeal, the accused had to call his male friend to come and assist with his vehicle which seemed to have a mechanical problem,” elaborates Thakeng.

“When the friend arrived, he saw the victim naked inside the car and she told him, she has just been raped by the accused,” he added.

The incident was reported to the police and a case of rape was opened which led to the arrest of the accused.
