Marumo Gallants blew their chance to trump the unstoppable Mamelodi Sundowns in the enthralling Nedbank Cup on Saturday evening, as the Pretoria Giants were crowned the 2022 Nedbank Cup champions.
The Brazillians claimed the bragging rights at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, where they completed a treble as champions this season, after knocking down Bahlabane Ba Ntwa, with a 2-1 win at the eleventh hour of the fascinating encounter.
The PSL’s top goal scorer, Peter Shalulile cracked the code, with the first opener in the first half of the match to give the Chloorkop side a lead.
Shalulile opened the score with a well taken strike in the box, to mark his 39 goals he scored for Sundowns this season alone.
The match went to the halftime, with Masandawana leading the pack with a 1-0.
In the second half of the contest, Gallants had fought back from a goal from Sede Dion following a superb cross to give his side an equaliser.
The Gallants strangled Sundowns to force the game to go into extra time as it ended 1-1 after 90 minutes of play.
Sundowns thought they will have a game in hand, when Lyle Lakay direct free kick went over the cross bar in the 100th minute.
As the game was heading to the penalty shootout, Gallants suffered a huge blow after the midfielder Ndabayithethwa Phillip Ndlondlo was sent off for a foul play.
Things went south for Gallants at the last minute of the match, after the long-forgotten Thapelo Morena, claimed his existence in the team to give the Ka Bo Yellow a late finisher to give his side a treble this season.
Masandawana’s “Dynamite” Khuliso Mudau, as he’s fondly known, walked away with the man of the match accolade for his incredible performance.
The Brazilians have now secured the DStv Premiership and MTN 8, and they have now garnered Nedbank Cup to end the 2021/22 in style.
Sundowns have now won 14 trophies in seven years.
