Orlando Pirates completed a remarkable comeback to defeat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the 2023-24 Nedbank Cup final at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga on Saturday, June 1.
Despite controlling large periods of the game, the Buccaneers found themselves behind after a goal from Sundowns’ Themba Zwane. However, Orlando Pirates’ resilience proved crucial.
Bucs’ sensational goalkeeper Sipho Chaine’s early penalty save was a turning point, keeping his team in the contest.
The Soweto giants continued their relentless pursuit of an equalizer, and their efforts were rewarded in dramatic fashion during stoppage time.
Substitute Relebohile Mofokeng, who entered the game feeling deflated after being omitted from the starting lineup, became the unlikely hero. Mofokeng unleashed a powerful strike that beat Sundowns goalkeeper Williams, sending the Pirates faithful into a frenzy.
This last-minute winner secured the Nedbank Cup trophy for Orlando Pirates, keeping their hopes alive for a possible cup double. Conversely, the defeat shattered Sundowns’ dreams of achieving a domestic double.
Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena acknowledged his team’s missed opportunity, despite appearing dominant for much of the match. “There was only one team on the pitch, but anyway that is football,” he lamented.
Mofokeng expressed his determination to make a difference despite not starting the match. “I felt bad…but I stayed on the game…I knew I had to be the game-changer,” said the young forward.
Chaine’s heroics, including the pivotal penalty save, drew praise from Bafana Bafana legend Brian Baloyi.
Baloyi believes Chaine’s performance merits a national team call-up.
The victory ensures Orlando Pirates continue their trophy dominance, while Mamelodi Sundowns will have to regroup and focus on retaining their league title next season.
