Sting operation crackdown 34 SASSA officials in possession of 100 cards

A sting operation that involves the police, SA Social Security Service Agency (SASSA) and the SA Post Office clamped down over 34 officials after found in possession of 100 Sassa cards as they were allegedly on verge of withdrawing over R100 000 from ATMS in Springs, Gauteng.

“They were arrested in violation of the National Credit Act, because according to the act they are not supposed to be in possession of the card of any beneficiary, any information relating to their arrest or when will they appear in court, the police will notify us,” says Sassa spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi.

Letsatsi further said the agency is investigating the matter internally.

Letsatsi said these suspects were intending to withdraw money from the cards – which they failed to disclose who these cards belongs to.

Meanwhile, no arrest have been made in a scandalous R89.5-million stolen in a cybercrime fraud from Sassa accounts last year.

The agency reported at the time that, the money was fraudulently transferred to over 279 accounts and withdrawn at ATMs using cloned cards.
