SCAM ALERT | Shoppers urged to exercise vigilance for ‘looming scams’ in Virginia CBD

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is warning the community of Meloding and Virginia to be on the lookout for potential scams and fraudsters.

Shoppers in Virginia’s CBD are warned to be careful and vigilant about alleged scammers who stand outside the business premises pretending to assist them with vouchers outside Checkers.

According to SAPS spokesperson in Lejweleputswa region, Stephen Thakeng, several cases have been reported at the Virginia police station where people were scammed money outside Checkers retail store.

“They take the cards as if they’re checking the card numbers and then from there they ask the victims to borrow them their phones, from there they transfer themselves money and then give the phones back to the victim,” alludes Thakeng.

“After sometime the victims realizes that they have been scammed and there are no vouchers to be given.

“The Community is urged to stay alert and be cautious, not to allow people outside the shop to assist them with anything. Should they need help, the cashiers inside are able to assist,” he cautioned.

Should anyone have information leading to the arrests of these suspects, is urged to reach the Virginia Police Station at 057-910 8240 or contact the crime stop number: 08600 10111.
