MK Party rolls out red carpet for Shivambu and Manyi after ditching EFF

The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) has announced the addition of Floyd Shivambu and Mzwanele Manyi to its ranks. This move comes in the wake of Shivambu’s resignation from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which he confirmed in a press conference earlier today.

At the press briefing, Shivambu revealed that he received notification from the Chairperson of Ward 44 in Johannesburg that his EFF membership had lapsed. He confirmed he would not be renewing it, choosing instead to join MKP.

“I have decided not to renew my EFF membership as I am joining MKP,” Shivambu said. “I will not elaborate on the reasons for my departure today, as it would be considered campaigning for MKP. I intend to play an active role in shaping the party’s direction and policies.”

EFF President Julius Malema acknowledged Shivambu’s resignation, comparing it to receiving personal loss. “The decision to accept Shivambu’s resignation is as difficult as hearing news of a death in the family,” Malema said. He also noted that while EFF rules typically prevent members from leaving for other parties and returning, an exception would be made for Shivambu.

Malema also revealed that Jimmy Manyi has left the EFF to join MKP and anticipated further departures. “This should not be seen as a collapse of the EFF,” Malema added.

MKP has indicated that Shivambu and Manyi will be assigned roles based on their strengths.

The timing of these departures has caused a stir. MKP’s recent performance in 2024 national elections solidified its status as the third largest party in South Africa, a notable rise that has put pressure on the EFF.

The EFF, which has struggled to maintain its position, has faced criticism and losses amid political turbulence and internal discord.
