The Democratic Alliance’s leader in the Free State province, Patricia Kopane, has tendered her resignation as the provincial party leader and as a member of the legislature with immediate effect.
In a Facebook post that raised eyebrows, Kopane said she’s not moved nor shaken by her decision citing that it was laid down with a ‘clear conscience’.
After nearly two decades as a DA member, having joined the party in 2003, Kopane said her aim was not to serve the party but the country and its people.
Before joining politics, Kopane was working in the healthcare industry.
In the DA, she served as a councillor in Mangaung-Metro municipality and later as a member of the legislature.
“The truth is I no longer believe the DA is the political vehicle I joined in 2003. I do not feel that I belong in the DA or that I have the space to make the political contributions to my country,” the post read.
Furthermore, Kopane indicated that her service to South Africans does not end with her marriage breakdown with DA’s membership as she has “much to contribute in service and cannot imagine walking away from politics while SA is in so much trouble.”
As a result, Kopane revealed that she will join ActionSA as the break-away party from DA is lobbying for her hand.
Kopane says talks with the party leader, who also resigned from DA, Herman Mashaba will soon take place to discuss her role in the party and her service to the country.
“I do this openly, transparently and with the pride of a South African who has unfinished business in the service of her country,” the post read at the end.
