Meloding community patrollers hailed for clamping down man with illegal firearm

The SAPS Free State provincial commissioner general Baile Motswenyane has sang songs of praise to the Meloding community patrollers for having courage to risk their lives to assist the police to clamp down a dangerous man with an illegal firearm.

Lejweleputswa district police spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng attested that, Meloding community patrollers were patrolling the streets of Meloding, when they came face to face with a 25-year-old man in possession of an illegal firearm when requested to take out anything that was unlawful.

It is alleged that the accused fled the scene when patrollers were endeavouring to call the Meloding police.

“They tried to chase him but he disappeared in the dark,” Thakeng said.

“Furthermore, the firearm remained in the SAPS’ custody, while the search continued.

“Coincidentally, the same patrollers were on duty on 19 May at about 14:00pm when they commented and marked the suspect at Meloding hostel.

“They then contacted the Visible Policing Commander of Meloding, who then assigned members to instantly attend the matter and a 25-year old man was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm,” he added.

The suspect is to appear before the Virginia Magistrate Court on Monday, 23 May.
