Masilonyana mayor charged with inciting public violence, granted R2 000 bail

Masilonyana municipality mayor Dimakatso Modise has been released on R2 000 bail after being accused of inciting public violence last year in June.

The 47-year-old mayor was arrested yesterday, 16 May by the Lejweleputswa District Executive Structure, and made a brief appearance at the Theunissen Magistrate Court facing incitement to commit public violence.

Lejweleputswa district police spokesperson captain Stephen Thakeng said Modise was charged with “incitement to commit public violence” following a disruptive action that took place in Theunissen, which led to the arrest of other four officials from the municipality.

“From the 14 April until the 30 June 2021, public violence was reported in ZR Makhabane road, which was closed with stones, rubbish, office of the municipality was burnt, the house of the Mayor was also burnt, vehicle thrown with stones,” said Thakeng.

“The following suspects Diphapang Maselo the former Speaker, Hongizwa Naki, Tshepo Stephen Maredi were granted bail of R2500, Masetjhaba Tsoaela and the other three, were granted bail of R2000 each,” he added.

The case was postponed to Thursday, 19 May for further investigations.
