Man (43) nabbed in Virginia for illegal possession of 10 carcasses

The Virginia police and Welkom VISPOL have made a successful arrest of a suspect found in possession of 10 carcasses on Saturday, January 7.

According to the Lejweleputswa police spokesperson, captain Stephen Thakeng, the police received information about stock theft in process at a farm in Virginia on Friday night.

“The police then sought back up from Welkom VISPOL and conducted way lay duties until 21:00 after identifying the farm,” informed Thakeng.

Following the setup, the police spotted a bakkie with a canopy travelling on the gravel road to the farm and the way lay continued.

“At around 22:00, the bakkie left the farm and headed towards Linabo Bridge.

“The police followed the bakkie until the Aldam/Virginia/Winburg where they stopped it. At the intersection, seven African men jumped out of the bakkie and fled into the bushes.

“In the bakkie, the police found eight slaughtered goat carcasses and two sheep carcasses,” added Thakeng.

The 43-year-old could not provide the police with proper documentation for possession of the stock. As a result, he was arrested for possession of suspected stolen stock.

The police also seized the bakkie.

The suspect made a brief appearance before the Virginia Magistrate Court yesterday, January 9, facing charges of possession of suspected stolen stock.

The acting Lejweleputswa district commissioner, Brigadier Mzondi Mojafi, applauded this joint venture that ensured the arrest and seizure. He further appreciated residents of Virginia for trusting the police with this information.
