Schools are hunting grounds for criminals in the Free State province, as criminals are continuing robbing pupils of their right to quality basic education.
The Free State education department and the police appeal to the residents of Hoopstad to help find culprits that made off with school equipment and food worth over R400 000.
It is alleged that when the country observed the national Women’s Day yesterday, thieves found a way to use the advantage of a holiday to rob Relekile Secondary School situated in Tikwana, Hoopastad.
Police spokesperson in the region of Lejweleputswa captain Stephen Thakeng said the alleged thieves, broke in to the school’s window, then cracked the burglar door to the safe with a grinder.
They allegedly fled off with a 60 mathematics tablets, two computers, four boxes of chicken soup and one 20 metre electrical plug.
“On a previous day, at about 5pm a 50-year-old caretaker locked all the burglar doors, windows and gates of Relekile, and on Tuesday, at about 5am in the morning, he reported on duty at the school premises to open for extra classes session.
“He found that the back window was broken and left open, the burglar door to the safe was cut open,” says Thakeng.
Thakeng said the police were summoned the scene and a case of business burglary was registered for further investigation.
The police has not made any arrests thus far and manhunt in currently underway.
Free State education in the district said they are concerned of ongoing lootings occuring in various schools across the province.
