Pupils stage protest over ‘rotten food’ in Letsete Secondary School

School pupils broke into a violent protest over the alleged ‘rotten food’ in Letsete Secondary School and educators were attacked following this demonstration, the police said on Thursday.

Police spokesperson in Lejweleputswa district captain Stephen Thakeng said, the violent protest surfaced after learners complained over the food contamination, and this raised high tensions to school pupils as they forced the school to be shutdown.

Thakeng said learners then disrupted classes, throwing stones at vehicles, while streets were barricaded with burning tyres.

“Streets were barricaded with burning tyres and apparently educators were attacked, at this stage the situation is been monitored and no case has been registered,” said Thakeng.

When asked if there has been arrests, Thakeng said: “The situation is still tense, but no arrests thus far.

As the protest continued to take charge, windows at classrooms were torched, while the main gate has been pulled-off from its alignment by angry mob of students.

Learners chanting outside the school, said there will be no schooling until these issues are attended to.

Meanwhile, the situation has escalated further, as some schools are on verge of joining Letsete Secondary School across Thabong.
