Free State’s Operation Shanela records a shocking number of detentions over a 14-day period as they peak at 2 152.
According to the provincial police spokesperson, sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, the local population has contributed massively to these arrests throughout the province.
“In an intelligence-driven information, the police detained trio suspects and seized eight illegal firearms,” added Kareli.
Drug busts
The Trompsburg Highway Patrol arrested a suspect for possession of abalone estimated at R2 million. In Bothaville, the police discovered of bags of dagga inside a vehicle on the R30 road and detained the suspect for possession of and trafficking in drugs. On the other news, the Odendaalsrus neighbourhood helped seize crystal meth worth an estimated value of R1,2 million. Another 126 individuals found themselves in handcuffs for narcotics possession and trafficking.
Burglary and theft
After detaining trio burglary suspects, the Bloemfontein Flying and Bike Squads recovered stolen vehicles and goods. The Smithfield police, along with the neighbourhood farmers, arrested five suspects for livestock theft and recovered 10 suspected stolen sheep. 50 more burglary suspects were arrested throughout the province, while 25 others were arrested for robbery.
Malicious crimes
Operation Shanela effected 276 arrests for assault with intention to cause bodily harm. For attempted murder, the police arrested 20 more individuals.
“The police arrested 13 individuals for rape and seven murder suspects,” informed Kareli.
Roadblocks and patrol
The imprisonment of 87 drivers came as a result of their operation of vehicles while under alcohol and drug influence. A further 101 people were detained for possession of hazardous weapons during routine patrols and stop-and-search operations.
Mass arrests
Kareli says the collaboration with other government agencies also had fruitful outcomes, as they arrested 268 illegal immigrants after immigration officials discovered they lacked immigration documents. Trace operations ensured the arrests of a whopping 878 wanted individuals by detective from several districts.
“This is a real illustration of excellent police work, with the help of concerned citizens,” concludes Kareli.
The provincial commissioner, lieutenant general Baile Motswenyane, mentioned that the province has 800 new constables, and that added manpower will keep up the pressure on the drug trade in the province.
“This also applies to all criminal groups in our province. We’re coming for you,” declared Motswenyane.
