The Free State government and the Mechanical, Engineering and Related Services SETA (merSETA) collaborated to intensify a goal-orientated youth development programme to ensure youth are upskilled.
Free State Premier, Sisi Ntombela, has always sort various ways to ensure economic growth, opportunities for success of business, and minimizing the skills gap.
The provincial government entered into a skills development partnership agreement with the merSETA, which is consistent with National Skills Programme.
During the launch, Ntombela said, “This youth-centred partnership will see a whooping R42 million investment into the province’s skills development project.”

She further announced, that the aim was to bridge the skills gap, and responding to the economy’s demands.
The premier highlighted that, to achieve sustainable economic development, skills development should remain one of the priorities.
“Free State Provincial Government recognizes the tremendous amount of potential in the province which needs to be harnessed to fully blossom,” she addressed.
This programme will see over 650 beneficiaries undergo training in the fields and environments of: 100 internships, 50 apprenticeships and recognition of prior learning for 100 young artisans with experience, but no academic qualifications.
This partnership will also caterer 50 learnerships for new venture establishment – young people interested in creating their own businesses.
Ntombela mentioned the escalating unemployment rate, and emphasized the investment will go a long way in addressing skills shortage; as well as the soaring levels of poverty, inequality, and unemployment.
“Most importantly, this programme will empower and ready Free State youth to be role players in the economy,” she stated.
Furthermore, Ntombela says beneficiary selection process will be very transparent, and municipalities will ensure that people meet the set-out criteria.
The premier reiterated that, bursaries will be available for 2022, awarded to Free Staters.
Upon closure, Ntombela urged pupils to consider NSFAS, as the Free State government is unable to compensate students.
